Volunteer FAQ

Do I need to buy steel toed boots? HFHT has boots you can borrow, but we do not keep track of sizes. It is first come, first served. Bring an extra pair of socks just in case. If you would like to buy your own pair of steel toed boots, you can get a 20% discount at ISECO (upon presentation of your volunteer confirmation letter) or talk to a staff member to find out where to go to find good deals.
How do I know where to go? After you schedule a shift, you will be sent a confirmation letter with details about where to go, what to bring, etc. You will also be sent a waiver that you should print, sign and bring with you to the build site. Do not fax the waiver to the office! If you fax your waiver to the office, you will need to fill out another waiver onsite.
What can I expect on my first day? Please arrive on the build site at 8:00 a.m. Orientation begins at 8:30 a.m. with a mandatory safety speech. Look for the volunteer coordinator, who will usually be wearing a pink hard hat. Orientation begins at 9 a.m., after which you will be assigned to a Habitat Leader. Habitat Leaders can be identified by their orange T-shirts.Be prepared to work hard and have fun! You will meet new friends, and learn new skills!
The workday normally wraps around 4pm, and you will have one hour for lunch. All tools are provided on-site (both hand and power tools), and it is recommended that you do not bring tools of your own.
