What is a ReStore?

Habitat for Humanity Toronto owns and operates four ReStore outlets in Toronto.  A ReStore (RE-Store) is a retail store concept that accepts donations of overstocked, seconds, used, discontinued items and salvageable building materials donated by manufacturers, stores, contractors and individuals.  Items can include new and gently used furniture, building materials, appliances, cabinetry, sinks, countertops, household and décor items. The ReStore then sells those items to the public at a reduced cost, typically 50-80% percent off the original retail value.   As a result, we constantly receive new inventory from a variety of generous supporters, every trip to a Toronto ReStore offers a unique opportunity to discover a fantastic deal, a one-of-a-kind item, or the missing piece in your design inspiration.

Toronto ReStore profits pay for 100% of the administrative costs of Habitat for Humanity Toronto.  By covering these costs, Habitat Toronto is able to direct every dollar donated to the organization toward home building.

Who benefits from the ReStore?

  • Customers - Save 50%-80% off retail prices on building materials, furniture, flooring, appliances, windows, unique home décor, plumbing, cabinetry, and so much more!
  • Donors - By donating new or gently used building materials, furniture, and appliances, you can help improve our community.  Our swift and effective salvage team can even remove the items/materials from your location at no charge. What’s more, when you donate items to a ReStore, you will receive a tax receipt for the value of the item(s).
  • Families - The proceeds from the ReStore cover Habitat for Humanity Toronto administrative costs.  That means every dollar raised goes directly into building homes and establishing new communities.
  • Environment - Whether you buy or donate materials, you are helping to reduce the amount of usable building materials being deposited into a landfill.  In 2010, Toronto ReStores diverted over 3,279,482 lbs or 1,488 metric tonnes of reusable materials from landfills.
  • Community – Our ReStores are 90% staffed by volunteers assisting Habitat for Humanity Toronto with the mission to build homes for families living in substandard housing.  This model saves over $420,000  in salaries each year.
