Volunteer with Habitat for Humanity Toronto

More than 20,000 volunteers per year contribute almost 100,000 hours of their time and talent to Habitat for Humanity Toronto.   Your volunteer support helps us build safe, decent and affordable homes for Toronto families living in need. 

Whether your an individual, corporate team, community group, a small group of friends, with skilled experience or not, there are many different ways for you to volunteer.  Training will be provided!  Please visit our on-line scheduling system to sign up today!

Volunteer Options

Toronto Build Sites - Habitat for Humanity Toronto has several construction sites across the City of Toronto - all with public transit access!  We are currently looking for skilled volunteers, amateur enthusiasts or professionals with construction skills who are looking to lend their experience and knowledge to help build homes.

Habitat Toronto Events - Habitat for Humanity Toronto holds many events throughout the year. The time committment, location, and type of volunteer opportunity varies from one event to another. Volunteers may assist with event day registration, become an ambassador on an event site, provide canvassing support, or lend a hand in another way as needed.  Different opportunities are always available!

Office Volunteers - Office volunteers can assist with a variety of different administrative tasks based on their skills, experience, and current organizational needs.  Our office is located at 155 Bermondsey Road and is open Monday through Friday 9am to 5pm. Office volunteers are expected to commit at least one regular weekly four hour shift for a minimum of six months.

Habitat Toronto Committee Members - There are several committees made up entirely of volunteers who provide task assistance, support, and/or leadership.  Our committees include - Marketing and Communications, Faith Relations, Campus Coalition and Resource Development.

  • The Marketing Committee's purpose is to assist the Marketing & Communications team raise the profile of the Habitat for Humanity Toronto brand in the local marketplace. Activities and support can include marketing strategy and campaign planning, public relations and media outreach, and/or graphic and web design and support
  • Faith Relations Committee is focused on maintaining contact and to build relationships with faith groups of all religions in Toronto. Activities and support may include prayful support, speaking opportunities, volunteer activities, assistance in securing donations and sponsorships.
  • Campus Coalition unites students from campuses across the GTA who share a similar vision - student representatives raise awareness about Habitat for Humanity's mission.  They help to mobilize student volunteers to help build affordable housing.
  • The Resource Development Committee provides strategic leadership and direction by establishing policies, making decisions and monitoring performance.  Committee members support the Development team within three areas - New Business Development, Research, Best Practices/Industry Trends.

Habitat Toronto ReStore Volunteer - With four Toronto ReStore locations, there are many differnent tasks a ReStore Volunteer can support.  Some items may include Merchandising of store product, receiving, salvage crew, data entry and more!  At a minimum, a ReStore Volunteer must be able to lift 30lbs and commit to a weekly 5 hour shift for a minimum of three months.

Youth Volunteers - Like the Campus Coalition, youth can become involved with Habitat Toronto in many ways such as assisting at Habitat events, office support, or school related activities.  Youth must be a minimum of 16 years old to volunteer with Habitat Toronto. 

Mature Volunteers - Volunteering as a mature adult or retiree can be rewarding! Your support is vital for the day to day activities of the organization.  Available schedules and experience is what you may bring to the table.  That said, no experience is necessary. 

To volunteers, we suggest:

  • Attend a New Volunteer Information session - it's a one hour session that includes general information on Habitat for Humanity Toronto, and if you're volunteering to build, what you can expect on a build site.
  • Depending on your volunteer activity, we encourage you to familiarize yourself with our Volunteer Manual and our Home Builder's Safety, Health and Environmental Handbook.  Both documents are available for download.
